Ski Season in Wausau

Wausau is by far Wisconsin's best place to play in the snow.  Granite Peak, which opened for the 2016-17 ski season on Thanksgiving weekend, is a popular place for skiers and snowboarders alike. It is quickly becoming recognized as the premiere skiing destination in all of Wisconsin.  In fact, recent improvements have brought extensive terrain updates and long runs, both hallmarks of famous ski resorts out west, home to Wisconsin.  At Granite Peak, you'll find the highest vertical drop in Wisconsin and along the Upper Peninsula, and a ski season that generally lasts from early winter well into spring.  Some of our favorite features of Granite Peak include:
  • A 6-passenger high-speed lift, 2 high speed quad chairs, 2 other chairs, and 2 conveyor lifts all designed to get you skiing faster.
  • 75 runs in total, split evenly between a variety of levels.
  • 4 different terrain parks
  • Lessons and Rentals are available
You don't have to be a downhill skier or snowboarder to enjoy the snowy winter months in Wausau either.  There are plenty of other winter activities to enjoy as well.  Here are some of our favorite ideas to get you outside into the snow quicker:
  • Cross Country Skiing is great in Wausau.  Beginners will enjoy the Ringle Forest Trail.  Others may want to try the Sylvan Hill Trail, The Big Eau Pleine Park Trail, or the Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area, which has 33 total kilometers of trails to explore.  Rentals are available in town.
  • Snowshoeing is a great way to enjoy the snow and explore the scenic beauty of Wausau. Popular snowshoeing destinations are Rib Mountain State Park, Ringle Forest trails, Sunny Vale Park, the Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area, and the Big Eau Pleine Park trails.
  • Tubing and sledding offer families endless hours of fun in the snow.  Sylvan Hill Park offers the best and longest tubing hill in the state.  At 1,200 feet long and 6 runs, you can have endless hours of fun here.  There's even a tow line to take you back to the top, a chalet with snack bar, restrooms, lockers, and a fireplace.
  • Ice Skating and curling are a wonderful way to enjoy some old fashioned fun.  In Wausau, there are several facilities, both indoors and out.
  • Snowmobiling in Wausau is fantastic.  With over 880 miles of trails to explore, there are miles of adventures waiting for you.  Licensing is required, so make sure you look into this in advance.
